Wonder of the Seas Embarkation Day: A Cabin Surprise and How Royal Caribbean Responded

Cruise ship docked in city harbor with cabin experience inset.

We boarded Wonder of the Seas ready for a vacation. We had packed our outfits, made plans for drinks and entertainment, and were looking forward to getting settled into our Boardwalk balcony cabin.

What we had not planned on? A mattress that immediately had Ant questioning how comfortable this cruise was going to be.

Our first day brought plenty of those “this is why we cruise” moments, along with a cabin concern we needed to address. If you are wondering what embarkation day on Wonder of the Seas can look like, here is our honest experience—from boarding in Miami to what happened after we spoke up about our room.

Boarding Wonder of the Seas in Miami

There is something about that drive to the cruise port. After the planning, packing, and countdown, you are finally getting close enough to see the ship. Vacation starts feeling real.

We handed our larger bags to the porter before heading through the terminal. My advice from experience: keep your travel documents, medications, valuables, and anything you will need right away in a small carry-on. Whatever you carry aboard may be coming with you to lunch, your safety check-in, and your first walk around the ship.

By 12:21 p.m., we were stepping onto the Royal Promenade.

That was our boarding time on this sailing, rather than a promise of when every guest can board. But once we walked inside, we were ready to enjoy the day.

First Stop: The Royal Promenade

The Royal Promenade gives you that immediate feeling of being somewhere completely different. Restaurants, bars, shops, and people beginning their vacations surround you, and there is so much competing for your attention.

We spotted the red car on the Promenade—one of those details worth slowing down to photograph. Then we headed to our muster station to complete our required safety check-in before settling into the fun.

My approach to embarkation day is simple: take care of the essentials, then give yourself permission to enjoy the ship. You do not have to see everything in the first hour.

Lunch and a Little Vacation Logic

Our first lunch came with the usual buffet decisions. Mine involved pasta, fries, and a few vegetables added for color. Balance, right?

That is part of what I enjoy about the first day. After all the logistics of getting there, even sitting down with a plate of food feels like a small celebration.

We also spent time exploring and soaking up the atmosphere. Wonder is a large ship, so I prefer getting familiar with a few areas at a time rather than treating the day like a race.

Our Boardwalk Balcony Cabin: The View and the Surprise

Our cabin overlooked the Boardwalk, with the carousel below and a view toward the AquaTheater area. We enjoyed looking out and identifying the different spaces around us, including Playmakers and Wonderland.

A Boardwalk balcony gives you a different experience from a balcony facing directly out to sea. For us, that neighborhood view was part of the cabin's personality. When choosing a cabin, think about what you actually want to look at and how you hope to spend your balcony time.

Inside, I took a look at the bathroom, shower, and storage around the sink. I even had a moment when I thought something was wrong with the sink, only to realize that what caught my eye was its design.

The mattress, however, was a real concern.

Ant noticed its appearance right away, and once he tried it, he made it clear that it was not going to work for him. This was not the comfortable start we had pictured.

We share the enjoyable parts of our trips, but we also believe in being honest when something needs attention. Rather than spend the cruise frustrated, we went to guest services to report the concern.

How Royal Caribbean Responded

Royal Caribbean brought us a brand-new mattress. The crew also fixed our balcony door.

We appreciated having both issues addressed on day one. The room did not start out exactly as we expected, but the response mattered, and it deserves to be part of the story.

Our experience is a reminder to check your cabin when you arrive and speak up promptly if something needs attention. Explain the specific concern and give the crew an opportunity to help. A replacement mattress was the resolution on our sailing; another situation may be handled differently.

Sailaway, Shows, and Our First Night

The cabin concern was only one part of a full first day. We still had a sailaway party to enjoy and Miami to wave goodbye to.

Later, the ship took on a different atmosphere. The Promenade had music and evening energy, while Central Park offered a more relaxed walk through greenery and restaurants.

We made time for the ice show, got into the spirit of the decades party, and explored the Boardwalk after dark. Being able to go from an ice-skating performance to dancing and then an open-air neighborhood is part of what makes the ship itself such a big part of the vacation.

If particular shows or theme nights matter to you, review the schedule and any reservation requirements for your own sailing. Knowing what you want to attend also makes packing easier.

What We Took Away From Day One

Our first day on Wonder of the Seas was fun, busy, and imperfect. We enjoyed discovering the ship, getting into vacation mode, and seeing its neighborhoods come alive. We also had to stop and ask for help with our cabin.

Would we have preferred everything to be right from the beginning? Absolutely. But we appreciated Royal Caribbean replacing the mattress and repairing the balcony door so we could move forward with enjoying our trip.

That is why we share the whole experience. The details help you picture your own vacation—and know what to do when something needs attention.
