What to Do in Miami Before Your Cruise: How We Spent 24 Hours Before Sailing

Couple taking selfie at waterfront with city skyline and Ferris wheel behind.

If you’re wondering what to do in Miami before your cruise, my first suggestion is simple: give yourself time to enjoy Miami!

Before boarding Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, Ant and I arrived a day early. We thought we would check into our hotel, relax, and have a quiet evening before embarkation day.

Well, Miami had other plans.

Between our stay at the W Miami, happy hour at Hell’s Kitchen, a waterfront walk, and a night out at Bayside Marketplace, our pre-cruise stay became one of the best parts of our vacation.

Here’s how we spent our time—and how you can use our experience to plan your own day in Miami before a cruise.

Start Your Vacation a Day Before Your Cruise

I know some people fly in on the morning their cruise departs. Personally, I would rather give myself some breathing room.

Arriving early creates a buffer for travel delays, but this trip reminded me of another benefit: you get to enjoy the city you’re sailing from.

Instead of treating Miami as the place between the airport and the cruise terminal, we made it part of our vacation. We had time to eat, explore, and enjoy each other’s company before we ever stepped onto the ship.

If your schedule and budget allow, one night is a great start. By the end of our evening, Ant was already talking about staying two or three days next time!

Stay Somewhere You’ll Enjoy: Our W Miami Experience

For this trip, we stayed at W Miami in Brickell, and the hotel helped set the tone for our entire visit.

We started with breakfast, fresh avocado, coffee, and views that immediately made arriving early feel worthwhile.

Our room had a spacious feel, with a long entryway, large windows, a king bed, and a bathroom that definitely deserved a moment of appreciation. It felt like somewhere we could settle in and enjoy ourselves.

But one of the biggest benefits was what we could do once we left the room.

We were able to walk to dinner and use the hotel as our starting point for exploring the waterfront and heading toward Bayside Marketplace.

Look Beyond the Free Cruise Shuttle

When choosing a pre-cruise hotel, it’s easy to focus on the nightly rate or whether a hotel offers a free shuttle to the port.

Those things matter, but I also want to know:

  • Can we walk somewhere to eat?

  • Is there anything nearby we would enjoy doing?

  • Will we spend extra money getting around?

  • Does the hotel feel like part of our vacation?

A lower room rate doesn’t always mean a lower total cost if you need a ride every time you want food or something to do.

You don’t have to choose a luxury hotel to have a good experience. My point is to consider the location along with the price.

Try Happy Hour at Hell’s Kitchen Miami

Our evening started with a walk from the hotel to Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen Miami.

For us, the walk felt short and manageable, which made heading out for dinner easy.

We visited during happy hour and ordered a variety of items to share. Burgers, fries with dipping sauce, tacos, chorizo, and a cocktail all became part of our little tasting experience.

That’s one thing I enjoy about ordering several smaller dishes: you get to try different things and turn the meal into an activity of its own.

If you’re curious about Hell’s Kitchen but watching your spending before the cruise, look at the current menu and any happy-hour offerings before making plans. You can find the restaurant’s details on the official Hell’s Kitchen Miami website. Restaurants

And before you leave, take a few pictures! We enjoyed the photo opportunities, too.

Enjoy a Waterfront Walk Toward Bayside Marketplace

After dinner, we weren’t ready to return to the hotel.

We started walking, enjoying the city, and eventually made our way toward Bayside Marketplace. Our evening included stretches along the Miami Riverwalk and a walk through Bayfront Park.

Honestly, the walk itself became one of my favorite parts of the night.

There were palm trees, boats, waterfront views, and that Miami skyline. We weren’t rushing to check off attractions. We were simply enjoying being there.

Ant liked the area so much that it brought back his interest in buying a condo in Miami. That should tell you how much he was enjoying himself!

If you like exploring on foot, this is a lovely way to make the journey part of your evening. Wear comfortable shoes, check your route, and give yourself time to stop for pictures. Your walking time will depend on where you start and which route you choose.

Don’t Want to Walk the Whole Way?

Miami’s Metromover is free and serves Downtown Miami, Brickell, and the Omni area. It’s another option for exploring without paying for a ride every time you change locations. Check the route and service updates when planning your outing. miamidade.gov

Spend the Evening at Bayside Marketplace

By the time we reached Bayside Marketplace, our quiet pre-cruise evening had officially turned into a night out.

There was music, food, shopping, and plenty of people enjoying themselves. The atmosphere gave us a reason to keep wandering instead of heading straight back to bed.

What I liked was that we didn’t need a packed itinerary. We could walk around, browse, take pictures, and decide what sounded good as we went.

For us, it was a fun way to spend the night before boarding. We already felt like we were on vacation.

See Miami From the Skyviews Observation Wheel

One attraction that caught our attention was the Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel at Bayside.

We decided to ride, and seeing Miami from above added something special to the evening. The skyline and waterfront looked beautiful after dark, and we enjoyed having time to sit together and take it all in.

Of course, Ant and I still managed to have a whole conversation about which side of the gondola we should sit on. Apparently, even sightseeing requires a little negotiation!

If you want to include the wheel in your plans, check current tickets and operating hours on the official Skyviews Miami website. Give yourself enough time to arrive before closing instead of leaving it until the very end of your evening. Ferris Wheel Attraction in Miami, FL

Leave Room for an Unplanned Stop

Somehow, our evening also included Hard Rock Cafe.

At that point, we were committed to enjoying every last bit of our time in Miami!

Afterward, we walked around Bayside a little more, taking in the music, the people, and the atmosphere before calling it a night.

That’s something I would encourage you to leave room for: a little flexibility. You can have a general plan without scheduling every minute.

Sometimes you find a place you want to linger. Sometimes you decide to grab another bite. And sometimes your husband starts planning an entirely different life in a Miami condo.

Is Arriving in Miami Before Your Cruise Worth It?

For us, absolutely.

We enjoyed our hotel, had a fun dining experience, explored the waterfront, and saw Miami from above. By the time embarkation morning arrived, we had already made vacation memories.

My biggest takeaway is this: your vacation doesn’t have to wait until you step onto the ship.

If you can arrive early, choose a hotel that fits how you want to spend your time and give yourself permission to enjoy Miami.

We thought we were booking a night before our cruise. We ended up adding another experience to the trip.
