From Interior Cabins to Luxury Suites: There's a Cruise Cabin for Everybody (and Every Budget!)

Couple in white robes relaxing on a cruise ship balcony overlooking ocean.

Think you need a fancy suite to enjoy a cruise? Think again! Let's explore some of the coolest cruise cabins at sea, what makes them special, and why the best cabin isn't always the most expensive one.

When most people think about booking a cruise, they focus on the destination, the ship, the food, and all the exciting things they'll do onboard.

But there's another important decision that can make a big difference in your cruise experience: Which cabin should you book?

And let me tell you, cruise cabins have come a LONG way!

From cozy interior rooms with virtual balconies to breathtaking oceanview suites, cruise lines offer accommodations for practically every travel style, personality, and budget.

As a travel advisor and one-half of the husband-and-wife travel channel Ant & Shira Adventures, I've had the opportunity to explore and experience quite a few different cabin categories.

Some have surprised me. Some have impressed me. And others have taught me that paying more doesn't always mean getting more of what matters to YOU.

So, let's talk cabins!

1. Interior Cabins: Don't Sleep on the Most Affordable Room on the Ship!

Interior cabins sometimes get a bad reputation, but I think they're seriously underrated.

No windows? No balcony? No problem!

If you're the type of cruiser who spends most of your time enjoying the ship, exploring ports, eating, attending shows, and having fun, an interior cabin might be all you need.

Why book one?

  • Often among the most affordable cabin options

  • Great for budget-conscious travelers

  • Perfect for cruisers who prefer a dark room for sleeping

  • Leaves more money for excursions, specialty dining, or your next cruise!

And here's something else to consider: Some cruise lines offer specialty interior categories with unique locations, layouts, or amenities.

For example, Carnival's Terrazza Interior cabins offer a different experience from a traditional interior cabin, with access to certain exclusive Terrazza-area amenities, subject to the ship's rules.

My take: Don't let anybody convince you that you have to spend thousands on a cabin you're barely going to be in!

2. Virtual Balcony Cabins: An Interior Cabin With a Twist!

Now, this is where things get interesting.

Royal Caribbean offers virtual balcony cabins on select ships. These are interior rooms featuring a large digital screen displaying a real-time view from outside the ship.

No, you can't step outside. But you can enjoy a view of what's happening beyond the ship without paying for a traditional balcony.

Ant and I have explored some interesting cabin configurations over the years, including Royal Caribbean's virtual balcony concept.

Why book one?

  • Enjoy an outside view without a physical balcony

  • Experience something different from a traditional interior room

  • Potentially save compared with a balcony cabin

  • Great for travelers curious about innovative cruise accommodations

My take: This is one of those cabins I'd encourage people to see on video before booking. It's definitely not for everybody, but it might be perfect for you.

3. Oceanview Cabins: A Window to the World

Sometimes you don't need a balcony. You just want to wake up, look outside, and remember you're sailing across the ocean!

That's where oceanview cabins come in.

These rooms typically feature a window or porthole, allowing natural light and views of the sea.

Why book one?

  • Natural light without the price of a balcony

  • Wonderful for travelers who don't want a completely enclosed room

  • Great for families, depending on the available cabin layout

  • A nice middle ground between interior and balcony accommodations

My take: If you enjoy seeing the ocean but don't necessarily need outdoor seating, an oceanview cabin could be a smart compromise.

4. Balcony Cabins: Your Own Little Piece of the Ocean

Okay, now we're talking!

There's something special about stepping outside your cabin with a cup of coffee, listening to the waves, and watching the ocean go by.

A balcony cabin can make your cruise feel like a completely different vacation.

But here's what many first-time cruisers don't realize:

Not all balconies are created equal!

There are traditional oceanview balconies, obstructed balconies, neighborhood balconies, and even some balconies that overlook the interior spaces of the ship.

Why book one?

  • Private outdoor space

  • Beautiful ocean views, depending on the category

  • A relaxing retreat from busy public areas

  • Wonderful for couples and travelers who enjoy quiet moments

My take: I love a good balcony, but I also encourage clients to pay attention to the exact category and location. A balcony overlooking the ocean and one overlooking a busy neighborhood can offer two VERY different experiences!

5. Boardwalk and Neighborhood Balconies: Wait...Where's the Ocean?

Here's where cruise cabins get really creative!

On certain Royal Caribbean ships, you can book balcony cabins overlooking neighborhoods like the Boardwalk or Central Park rather than directly facing the ocean.

Imagine sitting on your balcony watching people stroll through the ship, enjoying the atmosphere, or catching glimpses of onboard entertainment.

That's a completely different balcony experience!

Ant and I have explored the Boardwalk Balcony experience aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, and it's a perfect example of why you should research your cabin before booking.

Why book one?

  • A unique perspective of the ship

  • Opportunities for people-watching

  • A lively atmosphere

  • A different experience from a traditional oceanview balcony

Things to consider: Privacy, noise, and sightlines can be very different from those of an ocean-facing balcony.

My take: If you enjoy the action, these cabins can be a lot of fun. But if you want complete peace and quiet, you'll want to choose your location carefully.

6. Obstructed Balcony Cabins: A Hidden Bargain?

Let me share a little cruise-booking secret.

Sometimes the word obstructed scares people away from a cabin that could actually be a fantastic value.

An obstructed balcony cabin means something may partially or significantly block your view. It could be a lifeboat, part of the ship's structure, or another obstruction.

But the level of obstruction varies dramatically.

We've explored an obstructed balcony cabin aboard Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas, and this is exactly why I love sharing real cabin tours.

You can see what you're actually getting instead of relying on a generic cruise line photograph.

Why book one?

  • Potential savings compared with unobstructed balcony categories

  • Access to outdoor space

  • A possible upgrade in cabin experience without a major increase in price

My take: An obstructed balcony isn't automatically a bad balcony. Sometimes it's a great deal. You just need to know what you're booking!

7. Suites: When You Want to Treat Yourself!

Now, don't get me wrong. I love a beautiful suite just as much as the next cruiser!

And if your budget allows it, why not?

Depending on the cruise line, ship, and suite category, you may enjoy extra living space, larger balconies, priority services, exclusive dining areas, concierge assistance, or access to special lounges.

Some ships even feature incredible multi-level suites and accommodations that feel more like luxury apartments than cruise cabins.

Why book one?

  • More space and comfort

  • Additional perks and services

  • Great for special celebrations

  • Wonderful for families or groups who want more room

  • A more luxurious onboard experience

My take: Suites can be fabulous. But they're not a requirement for having a fabulous cruise.

And that brings me to something I've been wanting to address.

"You Can't Vlog Unless You Have a Suite." Excuse Me?

Yes, somebody actually suggested that you shouldn't be making cruise videos unless you're staying in a suite.

And I have to laugh a little at that one.

Because...WHAT?

Since when did sharing your travel experiences require booking the most expensive room on the ship?

Let's think about this for a moment.

Most people booking cruises aren't staying in the biggest, fanciest suites onboard. They're booking interior cabins, oceanview rooms, balconies, and whatever accommodations fit their needs and budgets.

And guess what?

Those travelers deserve to see what THEIR cabins look like, too!

If you're a family trying to determine whether four people can comfortably fit in an interior cabin, you probably want to see an actual interior cabin.

If you're a couple trying to decide whether an obstructed balcony is worth the savings, you want to see that obstruction!

And if you're a first-time cruiser wondering whether a Boardwalk Balcony is too noisy, you want someone to show you what that experience is really like.

That's why we create cabin tours on Ant & Shira Adventures.

Not to show off.

Not to impress anybody.

But to help everyday travelers make informed decisions about where they're spending their hard-earned money.

And sometimes, the most helpful cabin tour isn't the most luxurious one.

It's the one that helps somebody avoid booking the wrong room—or discover a cabin they never knew existed.

So yes, we're going to keep showing interior cabins.

We're going to keep showing balconies.

We're going to keep showing obstructed views, unique layouts, and suites whenever we get the opportunity.

Because there's room for everybody on a cruise ship, and there's value in showing every type of accommodation.

Come See the Cabins for Yourself!

Now that we've talked about some of the different cabin categories available, why not take a look inside a few?
